Weltevreden Cigarbox Shiraz

ABOUT THE WINERY: Weltevrede is a family estate that has been in the hands of the Jonker family since 1912. This beautiful wine company in Robertson was founded by Klaas Jonker, who had the idea that this was an ideal place for planting grapes. His son Japie took over Weltevrede in 1933. He further expanded the vineyards, because the sale of wine grapes from this region was doing well. The third Jonker generation, in the person of Lourens, was the first to complete a study in viticulture. Before taking over the estate, he traveled to the wine regions of Europe and California to learn more about winemaking there. After the death of his father in 1969, he became head of the company, which automatically covered 65 hectares. He expanded his business and bought the three nearby rows of wine farms, bringing the total vineyard area to 160 hectares. He only stepped down a short time ago to make way for his son Philip Jonker, who had assisted his father since 1997. Philip studied viticulture at Stellenbosch University and is a great expert on chardonnay, the grape that finds an ideal terroir in Robertson. But he has also made his mark with the estate's other wines, such as the very successful sparkling wines. Weltevrede is therefore an example of a wonderful family business.

VINEYARD AND REGION: The grapes come from the Breëriviervallei region.

VINIFICATION: Fermentation in open fermentation vats, to reveal the aroma of the wine.

ODOR: In the nose aromas of violets and understood as cloves.

TASTE: In the taste tobacco, cedar, laurel, espresso, black cherries and dark chocolate. Deliciously full and pure shiraz.

SERVE WITH: Can be combined with many dishes. Red meat, roast, smoked chicken, pork and pasta with a meat and tomato sauce.
