What is a steak?

A steak is a thinly sliced piece of beef or pork that can be grilled. You're probably familiar with the rib eye steak, sirloin, and the T-bone steak. However, there are many more types of steak like chuck eye steak, flank steak or bavette, and flat iron steak. Some cuts of pork can also be considered as steaks, such as the chop steak and the loin steak. A steak is cooked on the barbecue at a temperature of 180 to 200 degrees Celsius or in a grill pan. When the pieces are larger, we refer to them as roasts.


What is a roast?

The Dutch name for a roast is a braadstuk. A roast is a larger piece than a steak and is cooked at a lower temperature, around 150 to 180 degrees Celsius. A roast can be prepared on the barbecue or in the oven. Examples of roasts are: roast beef, picanha, côte de boeuf, ribeye, or one-piece sirloin and a chateaubriand. A roast can also be pork, such as the pork shoulder, a piece of pork belly, or an Iberico Presa.
