Tri-tip prepared

Cooking a tri-tip

Cooking a tri-tip is not difficult. The meat is perfectly fine to serve both medium-rare and medium-well. It's also called the "newlywed piece" for a reason. In the past, a newlywed couple would receive this piece from the local butcher. Usually, their cooking skills weren't that great yet, but with this piece, it couldn't go wrong. Besides grilling, the tri-tip is also good for use as meat on a skewer. By slowly rotating it over a nice fire, the meat gets a crispy crust and remains juicy inside.

How long does it take to cook a tri-tip?

Depending on the thickness and size of the piece, if you cook it whole, you can expect 45 to 60 minutes for a piece of one and a half kilos. If the piece is thinner than average, it takes a little less time, and if you have a very thick tri-tip, it will obviously take a little longer. It's done when it's done. You can see on our page with cooking temperatures what temperature to aim for as the core temperature.

How do I prepare the tri-tip?

A tri-tip has a lot of flavor on its own and could handle just some salt and pepper perfectly. At Beef&Steak, you can buy these spices ready-made, of course. Make a few incisions in the fat cap, making a diagonal diamond pattern. Sprinkle the spices on top and cook the tri-tip indirectly to about 48 to 50 degrees in the core. Then grill the piece on direct fire on both sides.
