ABOUT THE WINERY: Bodega Martinez Saez is a family winery where craftsmanship is combined with the latest technologies. The winery was renovated in 2001 and contains ultra-modern installations, with vinification taking place in an underground wine cellar where temperature and humidity are strictly controlled. In addition, fermentation and filtering take place in a traditional manner and no sulfites or sugars are added.
The winery works exclusively with grapes from its own vineyards to guarantee quality. The vineyard is carefully maintained throughout the year and activities such as pruning and harvesting are done in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way to prevent erosion and soil degradation. In addition to Castilla la Mancha, winemaker Antonio Rodriguez has also gained experience in the Rioja and Valdepeñas region.
VINEYARD AND REGION: Castilla La Mancha is the largest wine region in all of Europe (450,000ha). Located in central Spain, the Denomación de Origen (D.O.) Castilla La Mancha is a vast Old World region undergoing an exciting revival. A region where more and more characteristic quality wines are being produced nowadays. Winters are bitterly cold and summers are hot, the sun shines 12-14 hours a day. Rainfall is scarce, so the vines are spread widely to allow each plant its share of the small amount of water that falls. There is one advantage due to the challenging climate in Castilla La Mancha, only a few vineyard pests or diseases can survive, allowing grapes to grow in an ecological way without disease. Martinez Saez's estate has a total area of 550 hectares where both grapes and olives are grown. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 900 meters, which gives freshness, high fruit concentration and structure to the grapes. The yield per vine is low (average 1.5 kg) and in combination with the favorable climate the grapes acquire intense aromas.
VINIFICATION: The old vines on this plateau produce a low quantity (2 kg) of exceptionally high quality grapes due to the favorable continental climate. Fermentation and filtering are carried out in a traditional manner without sulphite additions. The wine is aged in American and French oak for 7 months, followed by another 12 months in the bottle. Pure red wine without sulfite and sugar additions.
