Before using the cast iron grate for the first time, it must be seasoned. Seasoning is done as follows: first, clean the grate thoroughly with water and dish soap. Then, place it in the oven or on the barbecue (160-200 degrees Celsius) and heat it for at least thirty minutes. Afterward, wipe the grate clean with a cloth or paper towel.
- Next, coat the grate with Crisco, clarified butter, or rice oil, and remove excess oil with a cloth or paper towel.
- Put the grate back in the oven or on the barbecue and heat it for one hour.
- Let it cool and wipe off any excess oil again.
- Once the grate has cooled, apply another thin layer of oil and heat it again for one hour in the oven or on the barbecue.
Now the grate is ready for use.
