About the Winery
"Mosquita Muerta" is a Spanish expression that refers to a person who initially seems to have little potential but ultimately delivers remarkable achievements. José Millán chose this name as a nod to those in the region who doubted his entrepreneurial potential in the wine world. Approximately 70% of the Mosquita Muerta production finds its way to Buenos Aires, where the wines have suddenly become popular among Argentine wine enthusiasts.
In 2009, José began with the idea of creating premium blends, not limited to just Malbec. For this, they carefully select various grape varieties from different vineyards at the foot of the Andes in important wine regions of Mendoza, Argentina.
His philosophy is based on using different fermentation and aging techniques in the winery to create beautiful handcrafted wines. This project is very personal, as each Mosquita Muerta wine carries a story from José that he is eager to share with us.
Vineyard & Region
The Uco Valley, including Gultallary, Vista Flores, El Manzano, Chacayes, and Luján de Cuyo-Maipú (the origin of Malbec), comprises some of their vineyards. The grapes from these vineyards are worked with as naturally as possible. They use yeasts that occur on the grape and in the vineyard, with minimal to no sulfites and a light filtration of the wines.
Vinification
The fermentation takes place in concrete vats. Half of the wine undergoes a light carbonic maceration and is then fermented at mild temperatures with selected yeasts, resulting in great freshness, intensity, and fruity expression. 50% of the wine ages in used French and American oak barrels for 4 to 6 months.
Aroma
The nose offers aromas of spices, pepper, dark fruit, and cedarwood.
Flavor
The wine is well-balanced, has a lot of structure, and a beautiful savory finish.
Pairing
Delicious with grilled meats and game.
