What is game meat?

Game meat is a collective term for all animal species that live freely in the wild and may be hunted according to legal regulations. The hunting season varies per species. For example, wild ducks in the Netherlands may be hunted from August 15, while roe deer hunting is only allowed from January 1. This primarily affects the availability of fresh game in the Netherlands. Each country has different hunting seasons for various types of game, which means that game meat is now available all year round. Traditionally, the game season runs from October 15 to December 31. During this period, professional hunting of most species is permitted in the Netherlands.

Farm-raised game

In addition to wild game, there are also several species that are kept in large fenced areas that mimic their natural habitat. These animals are bred purely for their meat and do not serve the function of maintaining the natural environment. Farm-raised game is very popular, especially in supermarkets. Its flavor is milder than that of true wild game, but the quality remains excellent.

Game from Beef&Steak

The Dutch Van Leendert family from Maastricht has been known for its game trade for many years. The man who laid the foundation in 1968 is Johan van Leendert. After gaining valuable experience as a market trader with his father, Johan, together with his wife Roos, founded a fish and poultry stall at the market in Maastricht. Quality was already a top priority back then — proven by the fact that customers from all over Dutch and Belgian Limburg soon visited the Van Leendert family.

In the following years, the range expanded with other game products, produced in-house for the Benelux. Gradually, French and German game connoisseurs also discovered Van Leendert’s quality game. The now well-known quality brand LOUISA was launched.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Johan van Leendert was one of the pioneers to explore former East Germany to access its abundant game supply. From there, it was a small step to Poland — the paradise of big game. In Poland, and later also in Hungary and the Czech Republic, the Van Leendert Group established production facilities that mainly process deer, roe deer, and wild boar.

In addition to these products, most poultry is imported from Great Britain, provided these products meet the high-quality standards of the Van Leendert Group. This way, the entire chain is managed in-house, ensuring honest, flavorful, and high-quality products.
